About WAAO

WAAO is an acronym for Watoto Arts Organization which in English is the Children Arts Organization.

Watoto Arts Organization (WAAO)
Watoto Arts Organization (WAAO) is an NGO which is situated at Migombani Street at Tabata Segerea, Ilala Municipal in Dar es Salaam-Tanzania. The word ‘watoto’ is a Kiswahili word which means children. The organization’s main purpose is to find, identify and expose young talented children in the world of arts. Moreover the organization also nurtures and shapes the children and their talents into the realm of arts. To do so the organization conducts trainings, workshops, seminars, exhibitions and public performances on Arts and culture. Towards the productions children are main target and proprietors under guidance.

Activities at WAAO include Traditional dance and Choreography, Theatre/Drama (Storytelling included), Poems, Solo singing and Choir, Acrobatics and Gymnastics, Painting and Drawing, Sculpture, Designing and handicrafts.

Vision
WAAO’s vision is to be the leading organization in Tanzania then Africa towards developing the children and the youth’s talents in arts and culture.

Mission
To find, identify, realize and expose the talented children and youths and to further expose these children and youth into the realm of Arts and culture.

The way forward 2011
This year, from 15-17th December, 2011 Watoto Arts Organization will be the main organizer of the 1st Children Arts and Culture festival. However, the event will be expertise by volunteers from the Department of Fine and Performing Arts of the University of Dar es Salaam and Taasisi ya Sanaa na Utamaduni (TaSUBA) former Bagamoyo College of Arts.
The theme for the festival this year will be “Arts and Culture for peace, Security and Unity”. In this festival we will also celebrate the 50 years since Independence anniversary of Tanzania.

During the festival WAAO expects performances from other children groups who have already confirmed to attend and participate. These include Shada Group-Bagamoyo, Kaomu High View Nursery and Primary School-Mbagala, JUA Group-Bagamoyo, Mwembeni Primary School-Vingunguti, Mtema Lugodi-Bagamoyo, KAPE Group-Kariakoo and Tanzania Children Talents and Culture Organization from Tabata Segerea.
